Why are you so good at your addiction?

If addiction were a skill, you’d only have got really good at it through practice.  It’s useful to look at addiction in this way.

Consider that your addiction is one of those skills that you have got so good at that you don’t even really have to try in order to keep doing it. In some way, the perceived barrier to entry is low. This allows you to continue despite good sound reasons to stop. This is not a conversation about intellectual reasoning. If it were, then the facts that addictions can be damaging would be enough to quit. So why isn’t it?


What's a better goal than beating your addiction?

A better goal than trying to quit is to simply get great at the ‘skills’ and patterns of thought, which allow you to do something else instead of the addiction. We understand that this doesn’t sound to easy, when you are in the grips of things. That’s why addictions can have such a hold over you.

It’s worth noting that there are lots of things that have an equal or greater grip on people that we don’t classify as an addiction, for example loving our kids, playing our games, organising, running… It could be anything.

The role of Stress in your Addiction

The difference is that some things are simply more useful than others when taking into account the end results that we want from life. In fact, the clearer and more focused you get about these end goals, the easier it is to get back on top of things.

There is a direct relationship between the amount of control we have at any given moment and how much stress you are under. What this means for us is that we must consistently look to reduce the stress we experience.

So how do we create the stress that supports addictive behaviour?

Whenever we negatively forecast the outcome of anything or beat ourselves up about the past, then we put stress into our stress buckets. This can be anything.

Any negative future forecasting or negative introspection about the past. It can be big things or small things, It can be the immediate or distant future or past. Interestingly, this has nothing to do with the facts of the situation, rather our perceptions.

The starting point, therefore, is to get better at not putting stress into the bucket in the first place. We do this by engaging in positive alternatives that may be either Action, Interactions, or Thoughts. Ideally, you’ll be working on getting great at all three.
