What is Insomnia?

According to the definition, Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which the sufferer has difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning. But insomnia is not just a cause of not feeling refreshed, it’s also a consequence of un-helpful patterns of thoughts and behaviours.

The negative effects of insomnia can affect you instantly (e.g. accidents may result when you are unable to concentrate on your driving due to fatigue) or manifest over time (e.g. prolonged lack of sleep can increase the risk of chronic health conditions like high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease).

Sleep is vital to our physical and mental health, not only because when we sleep our body heals and repairs itself. Sleep also allows our brains to process the information collected throughout the day. This includes any kind of stress, worry, anger, anxiety and general unease.
