When to get Help with Phobias?

Phobias become a problem when they start to get in the way. But they can be very specific and at the same time not be a problem. A fear of open water is perhaps not such an issue to somebody who lives a perfectly happy land locked life. On the other hand, if a fear becomes generalised, that is to say, it pervades other areas of life and raises anxiety more generally on a regular basis, then this is certainly something, which you should try to change, in order to get more from your life.

How does Hypnotherapy for Phobias work?

Because phobias are displaced/irrational fears that are part of the subconscious, they can be dealt with by bringing the thinking back to the intellectual, rational and conscious part of the brain. In effect, hypnotherapy can help you to move memories from the hippocampus to the main frame of the intellectual brain where we will have complete control over it. The hippocampus is part of the primitive brain, and it’s here that our behavioural responses and patterns are stored. These include appropriate helpful responses, as well as unhelpful and undesirable ones. You can think of them as blueprints that the subconscious brain works to. Patterns stored here prompt our reactions to both perceived and actual events of the day. When ‘X’ happens, we do ‘Y’. This could be anything from reciprocating a smile, to freaking out about a tiny non-poisonous spider.

How long will it take?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps us to a) lower any generalised anxiety in the first instance, before b) proceeding to work with the subconscious and conscious parts of the brain to effectively re-programme the fear response template, which is associated with the phobia.

For anybody who’s phobia is very specific, the standard phobias package is a total of 4 weeks/ sessions after your initial assessment consultation. Please note that it is not necessary to identify the root cause of the phobia, and analyse this. However, it can be helpful to recall the first or a very early memory of the issue, so that and/or the most significant one, in order to be able to access the template. Everything will be explained in more detail when we meet.

In cases where the fear issue is more complex and non-specific, a more personalised package may be required, but will be discussed with you personally by your chosen hypnotherapist.
